Early childhood behaviours, schooling and labour market outcomes: estimates from a sample of twins

چکیده
This paper examines the links between childhood conduct disorder problems and schooling and labour market outcomes net of genetic and environmental effects. The results show that individuals who experienced conduct disorder problems are more likely to leave school early, have poorer employment prospects and lower earnings. These findings are shown to be due to the genetic and environmental influences that are generally not considered in studies of schooling and labour market outcomes. r 2004 Elsevier Ltd. The return to schooling: Estimates from a sample of young Australian twins
This study uses a sample of young Australian twins to examine whether the findings reported in [Ashenfelter, Orley and Krueger, Alan, (1994). dEstimates of the Economic Return to Schooling from a New Sample of TwinsT, American Economic Review, Vol. 84, No. 5, pp.1157–73] and [Miller, P.W., Mulvey, C and Martin, N., (1994). dWhat Do Twins Studies Tell Us About the Economic Returns to Education?:...
متن کاملSchooling has smaller or insignificant effects on adult health in the US than suggested by cross-sectional associations: new estimates using relatively large samples of identical twins.
Numerous theoretical reasons have been posited about why more schooling might improve health. Adult health outcomes and behaviors generally are significantly associated with schooling. However, such associations do not necessarily imply that schooling has causal effects on health outcomes and behaviors. Causal estimates based on schooling variation from policies and from within-MZ (monozygotic)...
متن کاملBirth weight and schooling and earnings: estimates from a sample of twins
Based on analysis of a sample of twins, this study suggests that birth weight is not related to levels of schooling, that it plays only a minor role in the determination of earnings, and that ability differences that are not removed in the within-twins model of earnings are not biasing the results in twins studies such as Ashenfelter and Krueger [Ashenfelter, O., Krueger, A., 1994. Estimates of...
متن کاملIs education causally related to better health? A twin fixed-effect study in the USA.
BACKGROUND More years of schooling is generally associated with better health. However, this association may be confounded by unobserved common prior causes such as inherited ability, personality such as patience, or early family circumstances. The twin fixed-effect approach can potentially address this problem by cancelling these factors between twin pairs. The purpose of this study is to iden...

Although some point to the large effects of schooling on civic engagement (usually measured in terms of volunteering and participation in civic organizations) and social cohesion (usually measured in terms of social networks and relationship quality), the effects of schooling on social outcomes have not been estimated with the same rigor as the effects of schooling on labor-market outcomes, suc...
